Perceived general duties of a Construction Manager
• Early involvement with projects, working with the design team. Introducing value engineering, logistics and buildability into the design process.
• Assisting the commercial team in framing the works packages and scope of works.
• Managing the preparation of Health and Safety documentation, CDM literature and vetting Method Statements.
• Practical input into the build programme together with integration of design and information programmes.
• Responsible for site set up, site office and welfare facilities.
• As a site based CM - assume total responsibility for delivering the project safely, to programme and budget with a high degree of quality.
• Liaison with the client and his team, daily if required.
• Ensuring good records of activities and events are kept and assisting in reviewing works package contractor’s applications.
Personal attributes
• A wealth of experience in construction materials and techniques together with an innate awareness of the logistics of the build process. Well versed in the co-ordination of works package contractors including M and E and finishing trades.
• A naturally ebullient person with the ability to communicate at all levels. Having been self employed for a number of years (since 1993), I am flexible as to where I work and the duties I undertake.
• Extremely conscious of all aspects of Health, Safety and the Environment within the projects.

2009 Present – EE/Al Naboodah (Qatar) – Self employed Envelope package Manager
I was asked if I would move to Doha to help manage the roofing and cladding and curtain walling/envelope packages on three extremely large aircraft hangars on the new airport complex. Value approx - 20million sterling.
2007 – EE/Alnaboodah (Dubai) – Self employed Construction Manager
I joined EE in the UAE as a site based construction manager. Initially I worked in Abu Dhabi at the airport constructing the new baggage handling facility and managing a large cladding package on the new terminal pier.
I then managed the construction of 4 hybrid roof structures a mixture of 30mtr long Glulam beams, structural steelwork and standing seam cladding on a project in Dubai (Sports City.)
2007 – Gloucester Rugby Football Club – Self employed Construction Manager
Site based managing the construction of a new spectator stand and hospitality suites. The project consisted of vibro and driven piling systems, structural steel frame with pre cast concrete terracing, insulated cladding and a high standard of finishing in the suites.
2006 – Tesco Wick Scotland – Self employed Structural frame and envelope Manager
Constructing the first “green” Tesco store. Works comprised of the fabrication and erection of Glulam columns and beams together with timber wall panel cladding (panels made adjacent site in a workshop.)
2005/2006 – Cambridge re-cycling Services – Self employed Construction Manager
CRS offer a turn key household waste re-cycling operation. I managed the construction of two plants for them. Both plants involved a high degree of civils, structural steelwork and pre-cast concrete. I also managed the installation of crushing machines and mechanical handling equipment.
2002/2004 – PGA – Client’s Construction Manager
PGA were employed by Boston City Council to project and cost manage the construction of a large and prestigious sports facility built entirely of timber on top of piles and a raft slab. I was employed as the clients’ site based Construction Manager. The mixed facility is the first of its kind to allow for full inclusion for all disabled persons. The project included a full spec outdoor running and events track, an indoor training facility, health club, pool and spa.
2001 - PGA – Quality and Cost Manager
Having secured a 60,000m2 structural decking contract with a Belgian company, I was asked to provide quality and fiscal management for the project. I also travelled briefly to Hong Kong to advise a client in regard to the use of metal decking.
1999/2000 – PGA – Construction Manager
Construction Manager for a large fast track leisure project in Cornwall. The project, from green field site consisted of the construction of a large indoor swimming pool, with flumes and jet rides together with an external pool with associated changing and catering facilities.
1998/1999 – S and J Group – Self employed Construction Manager
S and J secured the contract to build the new spectator stand at Worcester Rugby Football Club. I was employed as Construction Manger, managing the entire process from site. A typical spectator stand consisting of mass concrete bases, steel frame, pre-cast floors and terrace units, cladded roof and elevations and high spec finishes to the corporate entertainment boxes.
During this period with S and J I worked on various projects for their steel, cladding and construction divisions. I also worked for them in Poland.
1996/1998 – Barwick Properties – Self employed Construction Manager
The project was the new corporate headquarters for the Oxford Instruments group. Some 3500 tonnes of pre-cast were produced for the structure with individual coffer floor units weighing 23 tonnes. The building envelope consisted of brickwork, vitral and velvac glazing systems and a kalzip standing seam roof.
1995/1996 – WhitbyBird Engineers – (Germany) – Self employed Resident Engineer
On this particular project I was employed as the client’s engineers’ Resident Engineer.
The project being the prestigious German Stock Exchange building in Berlin. I worked as R.E. on the 4 deep basement levels, monitoring quality of construction (reinforced concrete/ pre-cast hybrid.)
Duties also included close liaison with architects and M and E contractors ensuring compliance of on going works with their needs.
1993/1995 – Firma Agribau – (Germany) – Self employed Site Manager
This post involved the management of a number of large, turn key grain drying stores in the former East of Germany. Generally they consisted of large portal frames, single skin cladding and associated groundworks. I thoroughly enjoyed the harsh working environment and the challenges at that time in that part of the world.
1988/1993 – Progressive Structures Engineers – Project Manager
PSL offered the industry design, supply and erect packages for structural frames and envelopes. Individual frames were designed to suit structural parameters, site environs, budgets and logistics.
As Project Manager, I had responsibility for up to 5 projects at any one time.
1985/1988 – Tarmac Pre-cast – Construction Manager
As site based Construction Manager, I was tasked with delivering a variety of pre-cast projects. These included Multi Storey Car Parks, Swimming pools, structural frames, town centre developments etc.
1980/1985 – Blatcon Pre-cast – Erection Manager
Employed as an Erection Manager, I managed the installation of pre-cast elements to construct a variety of structures ranging from abattoirs, food processing plants, car parks and general commercial buildings.
Provision of all H and S documentation, craneage plans and method statements were part of my remit.
1975/1980 – W.E.Chivers and Sons – Junior Site Agent
I joined the company as a trainee setting out engineer and progressed to Sub Site Agent. A very informative time. During this period I attended night school to study setting out/surveying and concrete technology.
